Why Deep Geological Repository ?

Despite the optimistic development of the new technologies some amount of high radioactive wastes always remaines from nucler power plants, from different industries and medicine. This waste will be necessary to isolate from biosphere for many thousand years.

Why deep geological repository?

Many promising projects how to exploit huge amount of energy comprised in spent nuclear fuel and concurrently by this to reduce the amount of high-level radioactive radioisotops exist. As the example can serve ADTT (Accelerator-Driven Transmutation Technology) reactor, to the development of which as well as Czech scienties are involved. Even the optimistic development of the new technologies always some amount of high radioactive wastes remaines from nucler power plants, from different industries and medicine which will be necessary to isolate from biosphere for many thousand years.

The mix of technological and nature barriers is supposed for the safe deposition of those RA wastes. As the most promising nature barrier for the condition of the Czech Republic shows to be the massive rock of granite which fulfils requirements on the long term stability, homogenity, minumum flow of groundwater, suitable physical and chemical characteristics of the rock.

The standards of the most countries determine, the each country should see to deposition of its radioactive wastes. Responsible countries therefore look for and investigate the most suitable geological formation on their territory and design appropriate technology for the deep geological repository.

Deep Geological Repository in the Czech Republic

Considering geological conditions in our country the deep geological repository will be constructed most likely in the granite massive, in the seismic stable area. The similar granite formation are investigated by the scientists in the underground research laboratories in Switzerland and in Canada. Containers, their lining of bentonite sand and technical solution of the deep geological repository corresponds to the solutions that are accepted in the most countries.

Detail information about our actual results and about our programme are introduced in the following pages:

Reference Project renders the extract of technical and economic information about the current conception of the deep geological repostiory in the Czech Republic. The full text version comprises 1200 pages about and is accessible in the Czech version only. The reference project is situated in the virtual location of the granite massive.

Siting gives extract information about the activities necessary for looking for the most suitable location of the deep geological repository. The Czech full text version is available and containes more than 600 pages.

Research and Devolopment gives extract information about the proposal of the programme development and research resulting from the reference project of the deep geological repository, including the estimation of the time and investment capital requirements.
